GPA (Grade Point Average) and CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)

Each letter grade corresponds to a numerical value called a quality point:

MARKS IN % GRADE OUR EQUIVALENT QUALITY POINT
85 - 100 A HIGH DISTINCTION 4.0
80 - 84 A- DISTINCTION 3.7
75 - 79 B+ 3.3
70 - 74 B CREDIT 3.0
65 - 69 B- 2.7
60 - 64 C+ PASS 2.3
55 - 59 C 2.0
50 - 54 C- 1.7
45 - 49 D+ NOT PASS 1.3
40 - 44 D 1.0
0 - 39 E 0

A student's academic performance is determined at the end of each semester by computing an average of the grades she/he has

received during that semester.

The number of quality points for a class is the number of credits the class is worth times the number of quality points associated with the grade you receive in the class.

As an example, if the following grades were received by a student in a semester:

Units Marks Quality Points Corresponding to Grade Credit hours Product
(Credits hours x Grade Points)
Accounting 100 62 2.3 25 57.5
Economics 100 58 2.0 25 50.0
Informatics Systems 100 75 3.3 25 82.5
Legal Framework 100 DNA 0 25 0
TOTAL     100 190.00

To arrive at the semester grade point average (GPA), the products (credits x quality points) are added and then divided by the number of credits taken.

For the above example:
GPA = ( Total product for a semester) / (Total Credits Hours for a semester)
GPA = (57.5 + 50 + 82.5 + 0) / ( 25 + 25 + 25 + 25) = 1.9

CGPA = (Total product for all the semesters) / (Total number of credit hours taken)

The cumulative grade point average (CGPA) - an average of grades from two or more semesters - equals the sum of the

products of all the grades at Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Campus divided by the total number of credits hours taken.

For loan purposes, if the CGPA fails below 2.0, the loan providers will decide whether to disburse money to the students

based on their every semester results.
