Teaching & Learning

George Bernard Shaw once cynically stated: “Those who can, do; those who can’t, teach”. However, I believe that engineering academics have to be able to both, do engineering and teach engineering.

As one of the committees in the School of Engineering and Science, the Teaching and Learning (T&L) Committee aims to support the school’s commitment to excellence and innovation in teaching and learning. With these in mind, the T&L

committee has come up with initiatives and targets for the year 2009.

Among these initiatives are the T&L Sharing sessions, which run every Friday. Each session offers a platform for fellow academics to share best teaching practices, and the latest techniques in innovative teaching. In addition to this, the committee also organizes T&L related workshops for staff within the school, and promotes related activities running elsewhere within the university. The T&L committee also supports and encourages the practice of teaching peer reviews among the staff and develops T&L related strategies for the school.

Lecturers in the School of Engineering and Science have demonstrated their excellence in teaching, as evidenced by the two Excellence and Innovation in Teaching (EIT) Awards received by the school recently. We hope to build on these achievements for the future, as Curtin’s engineering academics aren’t only performing cutting-edge research, they are also effectively disseminating this knowledge to their students.
