Geophysics is one of the most exciting sciences as it seeks to understand the Earth's
interior - the physics of the Earth. It is concerned
about the shape and structure
of the earth and its physical processes. Over 500 graduates with Bachelor of Science
degrees in geophysics from Curtin can be found in very satisfying and well-paid jobs
around the world. Some are looking for oil and gas, some for gold and other minerals,
and others are using geophysics to solve environmental and engineering problems.
Students in the program obtain a very thorough knowledge of geophysics and develop
the practical skills that enable them, on graduation, to immediately take up
responsible
and interesting positions.
Course Description
Over one-third of the course is devoted to exploration geophysics and the remainder
is devoted to core studies in physics, chemistry, mathematics and computing. Students
gain a thorough knowledge about, and practical skills in, all aspects of oil and gas,
minerals and groundwater exploration. They are prepared for direct employment in the
exploration industry. This is a three-year-full-time course, with an additional Honours
year being recommended.
Career Opportunities
Graduates generally find employment with oil and mineral exploration companies and
geophysical contractors to those companies.
Many companies operate internationally and
personnel may be relocated on international transfer.
Course Entry Requirements
Students need to meet the general admission requirements of the University. High school
mathematics is required. Either physics or calculus is desirable. Applicants without
these prerequisites may also be considered, completing an individually designed program
over four years.
Please refer to English Language Requirements and Admission Requirements.
Professional Recognition
The course is recognised by the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the
Society of Exploration Geophysicists (USA), the European Association of Geophysicists
and Engineers, the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and the Geological
Society of Australia.
Note: Only the first year of this course is currently being offered at Curtin Sarawak.
Students wishing to continue in the second and third
years will need to transfer to
Curtin Bentley as onshore full fee paying students.
