This three-year course emphasises exploration geology for minerals and fossil fuels, and provides training in applied geology in topics
such as engineering geology, hydrogeology, environmental and exploration geochemistry and exploration geophysics. A fourth year (Honours) is also available.
Course Description
Structured in consultation with industry, the course is designed to provide professional training in exploration and applied geology.
It combines a comprehensive theoretical background in the subject with a strong emphasis on practical applications. The program
aims to develop an appreciation of earth processes, a broad understanding of all major branches of the science, specific skills in field
and laboratory work, and an awareness of the role of geology in environmental matters.
Career Opportunities
Applied and exploration aspects of the course account for strong industry demand for Curtin Geology graduates. Students attend four field camps of about 10 weeks' duration during the course, including the preparing of geological maps of selected areas. Vacation employment
in the minerals industry provides further experience. Most students seek employment in the minerals industry and many are also employed in petroleum exploration, groundwater studies and environmental geology. Curtin's geology course is recognised by the prestigious Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
Course Entry Requirements
Students need to meet the general admission requirements of the University. Having studied high school physics, chemistry, mathematics or calculus would be an advantage. Please refer to English Language Requirements and Admission Requirements.
Professional Recognition
Graduates are eligible for membership of the Geological Society of Australia and the Australian Institute of Geoscientists.
