Course approval code: KP/JPS(KA4758) 06/09
The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is awarded upon completion of a supervised thesis. The Doctoral thesis should contribute to the body of given knowledge on a specific topic, and does so through the development of new theories, uncovering of new facts or innovative interpretation of previously established ideas. The thesis is examined according to the University's Regulation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (by research).
Course OrganisationThe Doctor of Philosophy degree is offered on a full-time or part-time basis and requires a minimum of three years of study. The topic for the research project is assigned to the candidate after consultation with the Director of the relevant School and with the chosen thesis supervisor. The student then applies for candidacy. Students required to undertake a qualifying program must enrol in one or both qualifying program units and undertake a specified program of study. On successful completion, students will qualify to proceed with the formal Doctorate program. Failure to attain a satisfactory standard in the qualifying units will render a student ineligible for re-enrolment in the Doctorate program.
Course Entry Requirements A recognised Bachelor degree with honours or successful completion of Masters degree is required for PhD candidates. Applications from well-qualified graduates able to present acceptable evidence of their ability to undertake research projects will be considered. In the latter cases, admission may be subject to successful completion of a prescribed qualifying program or professional working experience. |
