Mechatronics Engineering is a profession of high technology where the challenges of mechanical and electronic engineering are
combined. Highly and flexible automated manufacturing environments require the integration of mechanical devices, actuators, sensors, electronic devices and intelligent controllers to create high-technology production systems that enjoy high level of performance and
accuracy. Examples of such systems can be intelligent robotic systems, flexible manufacturing systems, precise sensors and measuring devices. Curtin's degree in Mechatronic Engineering is aiming on providing graduates who will be able to serve the needs of technology-based industries by applying their skills and knowledge in both mechanical and electronic engineering.
Course Description
Curtin has a common first year for all its engineering disciplines, which builds students' range of basic science skills and knowledge,
with particular emphasis on physics, chemistry and mathematics. The Mechatronics Engineering Program offers a strong background in mechanical engineering, electronic and electrical engineering, computing, mathematics, modelling, a range of practical skills development in design, manufacturing and industrial technology, monitoring and control systems. A major project in Mechatronics in the fourth year provides the practical experience that typifies Curtin courses. The course requires four years of full-time study. The first two years
(First and Second Academic Years) can be taken in Curtin Sarawak while the remaining units of the other two years (Third and Fourth Academic Years) should be enrolled in Curtin Australia.
Career Opportunities
A graduate in mechatronic engineering can expect to find employment in the manufacturing or process industries, particularly where automation is being practiced. Organisations that employing only a few professional engineers will find the combined and diverse mechanical and electronic skills, which the mechatronics graduate will have, an advantage over the more focused traditional disciplines.
Course Entry Requirements
In addition to meeting the general admission requirements of the University, applicants should have completed high school studies in Mathematics and Physics. Diploma holders may be granted exemption in certain units of the course.
