Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Construction Engineering)
The course is an excellent blend of fundamentals of civil and construction engineering combined with practical skills that are essential to begin effective professional practice immediately on graduation.
Course DescriptionCurtin has a common first year for all its engineering students which builds their range of basic science skills and knowledge, with particular emphasis on physics, chemistry and mathematics. The second year of the course is primarily concerned with the development of basic scientific, mathematical and practical skills necessary for later use in civil engineering design and construction. The third year of the course includes applied engineering units in structural analysis and design, materials, geotechnical engineering, construction engineering, hydraulics and professional practice. The final year covers subjects related to construction management for large civil engineering projects including construction control, industrial relations, contract law, cost estimation and finance. The course includes project study based on laboratory, library and fieldwork, with partial assessment by seminar. Before graduating, students are required to obtain 12 weeks engineering work experience and a senior first aid certificate. Honours are awarded to graduates based upon their performance during the four years of the course.
Career OpportunitiesDemand for civil and construction engineers remains strong. Employment for graduates is mainly with consulting engineers, large contractors, specialist subcontractors and government authorities. Engineers may also establish their own consultancies in fields in which they have gained professional competence. Civil and construction engineers have skills that are readily transferable between employers and so may find work internationally.
