About the School
The Graduate School of Business (GSB) was established as a semi-autonomous school within Curtin Business School (CBS) in 1993.

The MBA program, our flagship course, was first offered in 1988 within CBS. Since then, it has established itself among the top MBA programs in Australia and in worldwide. The Curtin MBA was first offered at its Curtin Sarawak Campus in 2000.

The Curtin MBA was recently ranked in the top 80 MBA programs globally by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), publishers of The Economist magazine. The Australian Financial Review’s BOSS magazine ranked the Curtin MBA #1 in Australia for improving the skill

levels of its students.

Course Structure & Implementation
The Program involves the study of 12 units over approximately two years in part-time mode. The course is structured into trimester with a maximum two units of study undertaken in each trimester.   There are three trimesters each year which means six units can be completed within the academic year. Responsibility will be on the students to cover the required readings and submission of assignments.

All students will be required to have electronic access to course lecturers.  Students will be encouraged to form self-support study groups.

Classes
Each unit involves attending five weekends of classes over a trimester. A full weekend seminar (Sat/Sun) will be conducted by a lecturer

from the Graduate School of Business (Perth). Weekend classes (either Saturday or Sunday) are held by a Curtin Sarawak lecturer.  Attendance at the full weekend seminar is compulsory. Students are also required to attend the MBA Orientation Weekend.

Applicants are required to submit two recent referee reports, including an employer’s recommendation report and a CV.

If a candidate has not completed their first degree with English as the language of instruction, for the entire course and assessment they must demonstrate competence in English with a TOEFL paper-based test score of at least 580 or computer-based score of 237; or IELTS score of at least 6.5 overall with 6.0 minimum, on each skill.

Scores of  70% or higher are required to proceed to the MBA.  English language competency standards will still apply.

Course Standards
The quality of the MBA program is supported by strict performance requirements.

  • • Students who have marks of below 60% in four or more units will be excluded from the course. These students may be invited (at the discretion of the Curtin Graduate School of Business) to transfer enrolment to a Graduate Certificate in Business (GCB-100 credits), or a Graduate Diploma in Business (GDB-200 credits).
  • • Students who fail more than two units will be required to discontinue the MBA program.

Please be advised that the Curtin Graduate School of Business (Perth) approves applications for entry into the MBA, and advises the Curtin Sarawak Campus of the outcomes in relation to applications.

Exemption and waivers
Students seeking recognition of prior learning will need to provide evidence of formal postgraduate level coursework to the Academic Office at the Sarawak Campus for evaluation by the Curtin Graduate School of Business. Students granted waivers for units will be required to select alternative units to study, or undertake project work to complete their MBA program.

The decision for a student to ‘Defer’ a unit is an academic decision, made by the Unit Controller at the Curtin Graduate School of Business.  Deferrals are given on very few occasions, and only as a result of critical situations (e.g., serious illness, death and transfer to another country for work).

Should a student fail a unit, they will be required to re-enrol in the unit next time it is offered, participate fully in the unit in terms of attendance and submission of assignments. Fees for the unit will apply.

Application information
Applications are open throughout the year.  Applicants can submit a completed application at any time.  They will be notified of the outcome of their application within one month of its submission. Applicants are required to provide two refereed reports, a comprehensive resume relating to their educational and professional backgrounds in order to assist in the evaluation of their application.  A certified copy of academic records written in the English language detailing all courses and subjects completed in any tertiary (post-secondary) education, along with details of academic results, must be provided with the application.
