Business Strategy and International Business Competitiveness 660 (306052)

This unit is an introduction to the practice and theory of "strategic management". This unit needs to be done at the end of the

MBA course. The subject concerns those strategic decisions and actions, which determine an organisation's position in its

industry, the focus of its operations and its preparedness in the face of eventualities. Elements include competitive posture analysis, strategic portfolios, structure and strategy, internationalisation, managing strategic change and ethics. Students also get to practice

those crucial judgements on which the fate of an organization depends through forming management teams for competing companies in computer-based simulation exercise.

Economic Analysis and Asian Economies 550 (5697)

This unit focuses on the market from a business perspective and provides analytical tools which will help business understand its

market. It looks at the firm in the market place, market structures, market failure, government regulation and microeconomic reform.

The unit seeks to develop skills in economic environment scanning through aggregate demand analysis, understanding of the

monetary system and monetary and fiscal policy interventions, international influences on domestic economies, implications of

electronic business, Asian economic development. The unit is conducted in the context of Australian and Asian economies.

Financial Management 555 (5699)

This unit is designed as an introduction to accounting and financial management, for managers and professionals without formal

business qualifications. Specifically, it aims to increase your knowledge and understanding of a company's financial position and constraints, and how this affects their business decisions. It will allow the assessment of companies according to their liquidity,

profitability, financial backing and financial performance. In doing so, it will enable you to better understand the real drivers of a business

and to explain, in financial terms, the costs and benefits of decision alternatives. It will provide you with the skills to communicate more effectively with finance and accounting managers.

Human Resource Strategies 660 (6649)

The purpose of this unit is to provide understanding of the linkage between our organisation's vision and values, strategic planning

and operational human resource management. The unit provides participants with knowledge of and opportunity for practice in

strategies which 'mobilise' business planning through simulations and case studies taken from both local and international

organisations.

Descriptive statistics including data representation and statistical measurement. Probability, including discrete and continuous

distributions. Inferential statistics using the Normal, † distribution, chi squared and F distribution. Simple linear and multiple regression. Decision Analysis focusing on techniques that will provide a rational framework for decision making.

Malaysian Legal Environment 560 (5934)

This unit is designed to provide an understanding of the major areas of law confronting managers. The course will address legislative controls and common law regulations.

Managerial Effectiveness 571 (5755)
Credits: 25   Prerequisite: 5698 Organisational Behaviour 550
This unit focuses on key leadership and management skills such as clarifying personal vision, organisational learning, coaching,

time management, negotiation, goal-setting, stress management and communication skills. Exercises and assignments are used to develop personal and interpersonal effectiveness. The content of this Unit examines the developing roles of managers in their

regional and global environments.

Marketing Management 555 (5282)

This unit provides a practical understanding of the role of marketing in the organisation (private or public, local or global). With an up

to date examination of current practice and future trends (eg the impact of e-commerce and globalisation) this unit is both exciting and practical. Topics include: market analysis; segmentation and positioning; services marketing; pricing and financial analysis in marketing; communications (including database marketing); distribution and the role of people and processes in creating customer value. Actual development of a marketing plan is an integral part of the unit.

 

Organisational Behaviour 550 (5698)

The aim of this unit is to help understand how to manage people in organisations and to improve the effectiveness of organisational functions by focusing on the human aspect of work within Australia and its global counterparts. This unit will cover personality and motivation, leadership, group processes, conflict and work re-design, organisational culture and structure, through local and international case studies, individual and group exercises and a focus on new management theory.

Strategic Cost Management 660 (5906)
Credits: 25   Prerequisite: 5699 Financial Management 550
Case studies that focus on the accounting and financial aspects of business and government organisations are the major teaching methods in this course. Accounting structures, management control systems and their influence on employee behaviour are examined. Specialist measurement methods such as activity based costing, balanced scorecard and EVA are evaluated, together with international transfer pricing, budgeting and performance evaluation techniques.

This unit focuses on the theory behind, and application of, business operations processes and supply chain management. Covering day-to-day business processes, the unit examines how these areas can be analysed and improved on through the application of strategies, concepts and models. Students are required to research current thought on these topics and use a combination of research and their own business knowledge to analyse case studies and undertake a business processes-based examination of a local business. Several forecasting and optimisation methods are presented to help with decisions in the areas of layouts and flows, sourcing, capacity and purchasing, with an examination of the major concerns of supply chain management.
