Business Program
This program offers students the opportunity to practice and learn skills, and to gain knowledge, aligned to the business world. It is offered in partnership with Curtin University’s Vocational Training and Education Centre (VTEC) and is based upon the Australian Training Package "BSB01 Business Services". The program consists of two components; a "Skill Set for Work Readiness" and the Diploma of Business (BSB50101).
Official Statements of Attainment will be awarded for any units of competence successfully completed. When all eight required units of competence for the Diploma are completed, a certified Qualification will be issued. degree level. Curtin University offers up to one (1) year of advanced standing in the Bachelor of Business degree.
Based on the course information provided August 2005, RPL for the following will be granted:
Learning MethodsLearning in the Business Services program is competency based using the Australian accredited BSB01 Business Services Training Package. The program is studied on-campus at Curtin Sarawak Campus in face-to-face classes timetabled over five semesters. Much of the learning is facilitated through simulations of business environments and scenarios/case studies.
Assessments and AssignmentsLecturers will outline the assessment requirements (i.e. Type of assessments, dates, any special conditions) at the commencement of study for each unit of competence or group of units. This information is presented as an assessment plan. Assessment consists mainly of knowledge tests, assignments related to scenarios and case studies, and direct observation of performance in a simulated business environment. Students with special needs such as medical conditions, disabilities and/or learning difficulties should discuss the possibility of alternative assessment methods with their lecturer.
Assessment AppealsVTEC has a process to allow learners to challenge assessment decisions. The student must lodge an appeal (preferably using the Sarawak Campus Appeal Against Assessment Form) with the Learning Centre Manager no later than 21 days from the official notification of results. The Director of Pre-University Studies will notify the VTEC Coordinator of the appeal within 24 hours and will forward the appeal documentation by express mail. The appeal will be referred to an independent person or panel at VTEC. A written statement of the appeal outcome, including reasons for the decision, will be given to the appellant within 14 days of receipt of the appeal by VTEC.
Recognition of Prior LearningRecognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a process whereby skills and knowledge you already have can be assessed and recognised, irrespective of where and how you acquired them. If you are granted RPL for a particular unit of competency, you will not have to undertake learning and assessment in that unit, which may reduce the time required to complete the program. Normal enrolment fees are charged for all RPL. Program lecturers can advise on how to apply for RPL.
