Minimum Academic Entry Requirements

 

Country Qualification and Minimum Entry Requirements
Bangladesh Successful completion of two-year degree at a recognised institution and English competence.
Brunei Three "Ordinary" level passes (min. grade C) and two "Advanced" level passes (min. of one C and one D grade) in Brunei Cambridge General Certificate of Education (GCE) and English competence.
Canada British Columbia Year 12 - Senior Secondary Graduation Diploma (Grade 12) with C+ and English competence. Ontario - 2003 onwards Grade 12 - Ontario Secondary School Diploma with a minimum average of 70% in six Ontario Academic Courses (OAC) and English competence of 60%.
China One year of Bachelor's degree at a recognised University OR Completion of the Chinese National University Entrance Examination for admission to Key Universities in China for a four-year degree program (Gao Kao cut-off scores for entry to Curtin will vary according to provinces and courses) and English competence.
France Completion of the Baccalaureat de l'Enseignement du Second Degre'/Diplome de Bachelier de L'Enseignement du Second Degree or Baccalaureat de Technologique (high school leaving certificate) at a Lycees (senior secondary school) and English competence.
Germany Completion of the Abitur/Zeugnis der Allegmeinen Hochschulreife or Reifezeugnis (secondary school leaving certificate) at Gymnasium including English or separate English competence OR successful completion of the Fachgebundene Hochschulreife with separate evidence of English competency required.
Hong Kong Three passes (min. grade C) in the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) plus two passes (min of 5 points) in the Hong Kong Advanced Level Examination (HKALE); and with Grade C in HKCEE English (Syllabus B) or separate evidence of English competence.
India All India Senior School Certificates awarded by the Central Board of Secondary Education with an average of 65% in four subjects one of which must be English or separate English competence OR Higher School Certificate awarded by one of the State Secondary Schools Board or Indian School Certificate (Council of the Indian School Certificate Examinations) with an average of 65% in five subjects one of which must be English or separate evidence of English competence.
Indonesia Completion of one or two years of a Bachelor degree at a recognised institution or STTB/SMU 3 with an average score of 8.0 or above in four academic subjects from a Private (Key) Senior Secondary School and English competence.

International

Baccalaureate

Full International Baccalaureat with a minimum total of 24 points from six subjects at one sitting. Three of the subjects must be at the higher level and one of the six subjects should be English.
Japan Successful completion of first year of a Gakushi (Bachelor's degree) at a recognised institution and English competence.
Kenya Successful completion of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a minimum average grade of B or better obtained in seven subjects (including English Kiswahili and Maths) and English competence.
Korea Completion of Academic Secondary School Certificate with a score of 300 (75%) in the National University Entrance Examination (College Scholastic Ability Test) (CSAT) and university entry IELTS OR Successful completion of one of two years of a Bachelor degrees at a recognised university
Kuwait Successful completion of the first year of a Bachelor degree at University of Kuwait and English competence.
Malaysia

Two Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan (Malay medium) (STPM) passes (prior 2003 - min. one C and one D grade) (2003 onwards - min. one B and one C+ grade) and three credit passes at SPM level and English competence OR Completion of the Malaysian Independent Chinese Secondary Schools Unified Examination (UEC) in at least 5 subjects with 2 "A" grades and 2 "B" grades (excluding languages) and English competence.

Mauritius Three "Ordinary" level passes (min. grade C) and two "Advanced" level passes (min. of one C and one D grade) in the Cambridge Higher School Certificate or GCE "A" level and English competence.
New Zealand Completion of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) with a minimum of 42 credits at Level 3 or above achieving a minimum of 8 credits at Level 2 or higher in English with at least 4 credits in Reading and 4 credits in Writing.
Norway Successful completion of three years of upper secondary education at videregaende skole including foundation course, advanced course I, advanced course II and the subject areas Norwegian, English, History & Social Studies, Mathematics, Natural Sciences with a pass in English or with separate evidence of English competence.
Oman Successful completion of one year of a degree at Sultan Qaboos University and English competence.
Pakistan Completion of the Higher Secondary School Certificate of Intermediate (Division 1) with an average of 65% in four (4) academic subjects and at least 60% in English OR Successful completion of the first year of a three-year Honours degree with grades above 50% or B or two-year pass degree at a recognised institution and English competence OR Successful completion of the first year of a four-year degree in a professional field at a recognised institution and English competence.
Philippines Completion of first year of a four-year Bachelor's degree at the top 6 universities and English competence OR First year of a four-year degree with an average grade between 1.00 and 2.00 (between A and B or 85%) at a recognised institution and English competence.
Qatar Successful completion of the year first year of a Bachelor degree at University of Qatar and English competence.
Saudi Arabia Successful completion of the first year of a four-year Bachelor degree at a recognised institution and English competence.
Singapore Three "Ordinary" level passes (min grade C) plus two "Advanced" level passes (min of 5 points) in the General Certificate of Education (GCE); and grade C in "O" level English/English Literature or with separate evidence of English competence.
Sri Lanka Three "Ordinary" level passes (minimum grades of C) and two "Advanced" level passes (min of 6 points -excluding General Paper/English) in the Sri Lankan General Certificates of Education; and with C in General English or with separate evidence of English competence.
Sweden A Slutbetyg or Avangsbetyg from a gymnasium (upper secondary school) including English or separate evidence of English competence.
Taiwan Successful completion of the National Taiwan University Entrance Examination OR Successful completion of the first year of a four-year Bachelor degree at a recognised institution and English competence.
Thailand Successful completion of one year of a Bachelor's degree at a recognised institution and English competence.
United Arab Emirates Successful completion of the first year of a degree at United Arab Emirates University and English competence.
United Kingdom Three general Certificate of Education (GCE) "Ordinary" level passes or three General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) passes (min grade C) and two advanced level passes (minimum 5 points) in the GCE, and Grade C or better in "O" Level English, English Literature or English Language or separate evidence or English competence.
USA 2005 onward - High School Diploma with average grade of B or better in Year 12 and a combined score in the Critical Reading and Mathematics component of Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) of 1000/1600 (including 460 or above in the Critical Reading and Writing component) or a composite score of 24 or better in the American College Test (ACT) OR Successful completion of the first year or a four-year Bachelor degree at a regionally accredited institution.
Vietnam Completion of the Bang Tu tai or Bang Tot nghiep Pho throng Trung hoc with an average of at least 8.0 in four core academic subjects and English competence or successful completion of one year of a Bachelor's degree at a recognised university and English competence.
Zambia Three General Certificate of Education (GCE) "Ordinary" level passes or three General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) passes (min grade C) and two "Advanced" level passes (minimum 5 points) in the GCE and English competence OR Successful completion of the first year of a degree at University of Zambia or The Copperbelt University and English competence.
Zimbabwe Three General Certificate of Education (GCE) "Ordinary" level passes of three General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) passes (min grade C) and two "Advanced" level passes (minimum 5 points) in the GCE and English competence OR Completion of five (5) Zimbabwe General Certificate of Education "Ordinary" level passes and three (3) "Advanced" level passes (min grade of C) and English competence OR Successful completion of the first year of a degree at University College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, University of Rhodesia or University of Zimbabwe and English competence.

Note:

Subject Grades Conversion for STPM: A or A- = 5 points; B+ = 4 points; B = 3 points; B- or C+ = 2 points; C = 1 point.

For 'A' Levels: A grade = 5 points; B grade = 4 points; C grade = 3 points; D grade = 2 points; E grade = 1 point

 

Other Notes:

  1. From 2008 SPM English examination papers will be automatically double marked to receive a SPM score and a Cambridge 1119 score.    The 1119 score is the English requirement for Malaysian students to enter a Curtin degree program.
  1. Malaysian Independent Chinese Secondary Schools Unified Examination (UEC) students, without the appropriate English requirements,
  2. will be provided with a Challenge Test of English - CUTE. The results of the Challenge Test will determine direct entry into a degree
  3. program or direct entry with the condition of taking parallel and additional study in academic English. Local students will need to pay RM200 and International students RM300 to sit for the challenge test.

 

  1. It is acknowledged that the CUTE D test level scores will place constraints on some of Curtin Sarawak’s traditional markets. However,
  2. given the analysis of the test and the finding that ONE area of language is less acceptable than others, a student may be considered for
  3. entry into the degree on the condition that a series of modules provided by The Learning Centre will be undertaken by the student in the identified area of need. The entry of such a student into a degree program will be on a case-by case basis with the final decision resting
  4. with the Dean (Academic and Teaching and Learning).
