Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) Compulsory Subjects Introduction
Compulsory subjects are subjects which every private higher education institution (PHEI) student is
required to take.
The Private Higher Educational Institution Act 1996 (Act 555) provides that every private higher
education institutions shall teach the following Compulsory Subjects:
- National Language
- Malaysian Studies
- Islamic Studies for students professing the Islamic religion
- Moral Education for non-Muslim students.
There are two syllabuses for National Language - Syllabus A (advanced syllabus) is prepared for Malaysian students while Syllabus B (introductory syllabus) is prepared for international students.
The Act states that ALL Malaysian students are compelled to attend classes and pass these compulsory subjects as a pre-requisite to the award of a certificate, diploma or degree. Student who are non-citizens are given options whether to attend or not these classes and it is not compulsory for them to pass these compulsory subjects.
