Students to raise awareness of youth and community leadership
Miri – 27 May 2009 – Participants of the John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA) of Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia (Curtin Sarawak) who undertake community service projects supporting non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Miri will be holding a ‘JCLA Awareness Campaign’ to raise awareness of the JCLA programme and its activities at the university campus on 29 May 2009.
The event will take place from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm and feature talks by the NGOs, a video presentation, project presentation by JCLA groups, and a telematch open to the public and offering attractive prizes for winners.
“The event will give our students and guests the opportunity to interact with the JCLA participants and also the beneficiaries of their projects. We hope that through this awareness campaign, more students and youth will take up community work and invest their talents and time in community leadership,” said Karen Kuek, chairperson of the campaign.
She added that the campaign is designed to draw attention to the NGOs and invoke respect for these NGOs among students and members of the public.
The event will be followed by a poster presentation for invited guests, between 2.00 pm and 4.30 pm, during which Deputy Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Joan Gribble and Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development & Communication Lee Kim Shin, who is also the chairman of the management board of the university, are expected to address the gathering.
