Curtin students hold CPA Undergraduate Business Conference

The Accounting Club of Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia successfully organized its 5th Undergraduate Business Conference themed ‘Jazz up, Fuel up, Shine!’ last Saturday at the campus Lecture Theater.

The objectives of the Conference were multifold: to enhance students’ knowledge of contemporary business issues, enhance the Curtin Graduates Attributes, prepare undergraduates for entry into the corporate world and instill a sense of social responsibility.
Prominent and experienced speakers from the industry like Ernst & Young and the Toastmasters Club Miri were invited to deliver talks.

Feedback from the participants was positive and encouraging. Participants said that topics like “Knowing yourself and understanding work environment: personality, attitude and behaviour” by Dr. Adeline Wong, Curtin Academic Registrar were particularly interesting and useful.

Approximately 200 students attended the conference. The opening ceremony was officiated by Professor Joan Gribble, Dean of Academic and Teaching and Learning. Gerald Fernandez of CPA Australia Council Member and Shamsul Kamariah of Director School of Business were in attendance.

“I think that Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is something that our young people here at Curtin need to be aware of. It is an important feature of the corporate world which you will be joining very soon,” Professor Joan Gribble said in her opening address.

The Accounting Club has always emphasised CSR. This year, the Club initiated a fund-raising project for 3 charitable organizations: Sunflower Centre, Miri Mental Health Association and Miri Old Folks’ Home.
