About BRC

The Borneo Research Council (BRC) was established in 1968 as an incorporated non-profit organisation for the advancement of knowledge in the social, biological and medical sciences with regards to Borneo (Sarawak, Sabah, Kalimantan and Brunei). The Council consists of an international group of eminent scholars engaged in a diversity of Borneo-related research: it holds biennial international conferences at which the latest research findings in all academic fields are presented, discussed and eventually published. Since 1990, these international conferences have been held at various institutions located all around Borneo. Previous hosts of BRC international conferences include: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS); the Centre for Borneo Studies (Sabah Foundation) & the Department of Sabah Museum; Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS); the University of Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan; and Universiti Brunei Darussalam. Hosted by Curtin University of Technology Sarawak Malaysia, the 2010 Conference will be the first BRC biennial international conference to be held in Miri City, Northern Sarawak. The Borneo Research Council, Inc., is an apolitical organization whose purpose is to encourage and promote research among the people of the seven political units of Borneo. Recognizing and respecting differences of opinions, the council has from its inception attempted to avoid involvement in political issues. At the same time, the officers and board of directors recognize and respect the rights and responsibilities of individual fellows and members as scientists and scholars to speak on policy issues where appropriate on the basis of their studies and research. The officers and board of directors also encourage scholars and scientists to make their research and scholarly findings available to inform discussions of policy matters.
