Policy on Financial Support for Academic Staff conference Attendance 2008

Curtin Sarawak Malaysia (CSM) identifies excellence in Research and Development as an important strategic goal. The development of an international research profile is considered to be a critical success factor to achieve the vision of CSM.

Curtin Sarawak Malaysia therefore encourages the participation of its academic staff in national and international conferences, whenever papers of the highest standards are to be presented, through financial support.

2. Nature and requirements for conference attendance support

3. Conference attendance support will be available only for papers published in refereed conferences with good referee comments.

5. Conference attendance support for an individual is limited to one national/regional conference every year.

7. Support for attendance in an international conference is available once in two years. However, no support for attendance in a national/regional conference will be available in that year.

9. To be eligible for support in international conferences, evidence of publication/submission/ working on submission of paper to a journal may also be required.

11. Research activeness evidenced by writing/winning research proposals, delivery/participation in R&D seminars, research supervision and other contributions to research and development activities may also be required.

13. Consideration may also be given to R&D activities that are strategic to the R&D of the University.

15. A minimum service of one full semester is required at the time of application.

17. Support for conference attendance is subject to the availability of funds.

19. Staff should submit their published papers and other details to the Curtin Sarawak Library for uploading on espace.

Level of support

• Up to RM 2,500 for national/regional conferences. If the conference is outside the region and the total support is less than RM 2,500, or if the total amount is more than RM 2,500 and the staff attends the conference availing of additional funds from other/personal sources, the conference would come under the category of a national/regional conference.

  
  

• Up to RM 5,000 for international conferences.

  
  

• Support will be in full up to the limits specified above. Support will cover all eligible expenses to attend conferences. Only early registration is covered. Conference dinner, tour, etc., are not covered.

  
  

• The Schools may support attendance in workshops and short courses organized along with the conferences as professional development activity, from the budget of the Schools.

Withdrawal and return of approved support

• If the staff resigns from the employment with the University before attending the conference, the approved support is withdrawn and the staff is liable for all expenditures incurred.

  
  

• If the staff resigns from the employment with the University before the end of the semester in which he/she attended a conference on support from the university, the staff shall return the university all the support received.

  
  

• This does not apply to the staff who do not resign, but complete their employment with the university as per the terms of agreement.
