The Intensive English Programme (IEP) is designed specially to improve students' general English language proficiency. This programme specifically caters for potential tertiary education students who lack the English language entry requirements to enter a Foundation, Diploma, or Degree course.
The IEP consists of 4 levels: Elementary, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. The course consists of 20 contact hours per week. There are three intakes/terms a year. Each term comprises of 10 weeks.
A Placement Test is administered to determine students' command of English. Based on the test results, students are placed at the appropriate IEP level for study and continued progress.
By the end of the programme, students are expected to critically analyse information, create cogent arguments and deliver academic presentations. Students at the Advanced level take the Curtin University Test of English (CUTE) as the exit test. The bands that students achieve from this test can be used to meet the English entry requirements at the different levels of entry to Curtin courses.
