Intensive English Program

The Intensive English Programme (IEP) is designed specially to improve general English language proficiency and it specifically caters for potential tertiary education students who lack the English language entry requirements to do so.

At the lower levels, teaching materials and classroom activities allow students to practise listening and reading comprehension. Students learn communicative skills through role plays, games and group discussions on everyday topics with support from written texts. In writing classes, students write narrative, descriptive and comparative paragraphs.

At the higher levels of the programme, the English Language skills taught prepare students for academic purposes. By the end of the programme, students are expected to critically analyse information, deliver academic presentations, and make cogent arguments.

The Intensive English Programme (IEP) consists of 3 levels: Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. The four core language  skills are taught as an integrated unit in Intermediate and Upper Intermediate Level together with 2 units of Targeted skills. In the Advanced level, the units offered include Listening, Reading, Speaking , Writing , Grammar and Test Taking Strategies.  The course consists of 20 contact hours per week.

A Placement Test is administered to registered students of Curtin Sarawak to determine their command of English. Based on the test scores, students are placed at the appropriate IEP level.

There are three intakes/terms a year. Each term comprises of 10 teaching weeks. Ongoing assessments and end of term examinations

are conducted to determine students' progress to higher levels of the programme. Upon completion of each level, certificates of completion and examination transcripts are awarded to students. An exit examination will be conducted for eligible students in the highest level to demonstrate whether they meet the English competency required for entry into Curtin University of Technology diplomas and degrees at

the Sarawak campus. Successful students will then be able to join these mainstream programmes.
