Milestone
The members support in terms of participation and contributions have been overwhelming.
Raya gathering – a successful high tea was arranged with the kind contributions from staff, food outlet operators at Curtin. Various Sarawakian Malay foods and other Malaysian delicacies were served for a high-tea on 24 September 2010. The REC-center was decorated with a simple but delightful decoration for this occasion. Thanks to all the departments for the fake ketupat and bunga manggar used for decoration.
Family Day - The 2010 Family Day was held on Tanjong Lobang beach, Teams were given colour coded ribbons. The teams, named after the building blocks at Curtin Sarawak i.e Falcon, Kingfisher, Prinia, Skylark, Heron and Hornbill were challenged with some unconventional games. The Kiddie Corner attracted screaming children who were entertained by professionals and a clown. As any Curtin activity, plenty of food and beverages were served. The family day came with a championship trophy.
The overall Championship went to Falcon, led by Dr Yudi Samyudia. As such the trophy is currently sitting in the School of Engineering awaiting another year of fun and enjoyment.
Annual Dinner – Hosted at Parkcity Everly hotel the 2010 annual dinner was themed as “Night of the hats”. The simple and easy theme for staff to adhere to, attracted a full house on 13 November 2011. Several ladies and gentlemen came dressed to kill for the occasion. The entertainment for the day was performed exclusively by talented staff members. Thanks to our sponsorship team, some valuable and lovely gifts were given away to some well deserving staff. In addition to this, Curtin took this opportunity to award their long serving staff.
As the theme was night of the hats, awards went to best headgears instead of the conventional best dressed. The best male headgear went to Peter Jamba (SOF) and the best female headgear went to Vivian Aren Imang (Administration).
Deepavali/Christmas/New Year/Chinese New Year Gathering - Another high tea was held at REC-center, exposing staff to various cultural decorations which included Indian Kolom, Chrsitmas Tree, Chinese Lanterns to welcome the auspicious Rabbit year. Foods of various cultures were served. As the dates of all the festivals were close to each other and it was a long semester break, it made sense to celebrate all at one time.
Jogathon - As we were eating too much food with no exercise, CRC organised jogathon which coincided with a jogathon event for students. As usual the sponsorship team attracted all the food outlet operators at Curtin to provide isotonic drinks and food. It was a 5km jogathon and the male champions are Dereje Engide Woldemicheal (SOE), Jameson Malang (SOF), Chen Chew Leong (Finance) and who took the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes respectively. Meanwhile, the female category was won by Mislina (security), Susan Tuah (HR) and Saribi Longi (security) respectively.
Community service – In an effort to be a socially responsible CRC committee, the 2010/11 committee assisted Sister Ursula at Krokop Old Aged Home to clean the home’s drains and windows. Sister Ursula and her 4 helpers provide care for the old aged. The 28 residents of the home, both male and female have been either abandoned by their family or do not have a family.
Besides cooking and caring for the residents, these sister Ursula and the helpers have little time and energy to keep the area surrounding the clean and liveable. Sister Ursula relies primarily on the community services to help her maintain the place. CRC committee members visited the home on 25 June 2011 and spent the Saturday morning cleaning the windows and drains that have been clogged with moss and plants. In addition, CRC provided the residents with packets of nasi lemak for lunch, and returned with a day’s good deed and plenty of blessings from sister Ursula.
Ngiling Tikai – The Gawai closing ceremony was celebrated at Curtin on 30 June 2011 at Curtin cafeteria at 4pm. With the help of several staff, the ceremony was carried out in line with Iban traditions. A Curtin staff played the role of ‘Tuai Rumah’, carrying out the blessing ceremony with the help of guests of honour; Prof. Dr Alistair and Mr James Ng. A sumptuous high tea consisting of traditional Iban food was served. ‘Tuak’ (rice wine) was served in short glasses by ‘Kumang’ and ‘Keling’ dressed in traditional costumes as guests arrived. The ceremony ended with traditional dances, the mock sacrifice of a rooster, the chopping of the banana tree and the rolling of ‘Tikai’ (mat). All in all, it was colourful, joyously ending the one month Gawai celebration.
CRC Amazing Race – The teams were flagged off at 7.30am, Saturday, 23 July 2011. Six enthusiastic and sporting teams took part. Each team with 4 team members came ready with their funky cars.
